Year 7 – Year 8
Owen is from the south of the United Kingdom. He has a BA (Hons) in Geography from Plymouth University with a Certificate of Industrial Placement at an international engineering firm. Owen completed a graduate scheme as a Transport Planner which involved designing and delivering public transport and road improvements. Following in the footsteps of both his parents, he changed his career by gaining a PGCE from the University of the West of England (Bristol). Owen has taught in a range of schools and ages in the UK. At his previous school, he was Head of Year and Head of Reading. During his career, he has become a specialist in the teaching of maths and science. He has a passion for providing engaging practical science activities.
In his spare time, Owen loves exploring nature and reading science books. Back in the UK, he had a range of pets including chickens and a tortoise. He is a qualified RYA dinghy instructor who, before moving to Penang, volunteered at his local sailing club coaching children of all ages. After being a teacher in the UK for a decade, Owen decided it was time to seek out new challenges and is thoroughly enjoying his time on the Pearl of the Orient.
Theo is from London in the United Kingdom, and having grown up there moved to North East of England to study at Durham University. After graduating with a BA in Classics, Theo joined the Teach First programme where he trained as a maths teacher, and he has since taught at secondary level for five years in schools in Hartlepool and Teesside. Outside the classroom, Theo is an enthusiastic runner, a keen trombone player, and a fan of number based puzzles (particularly killer sudokus). With a variety of teaching experiences and schools under his belt, Theo is excited to be starting a new challenge in a different country – and can’t wait to spread enthusiasm for maths and problem solving in Penang!

Ryan is originally from Manchester, in the United Kingdom. He gained his degree in English Literature at Loughborough University before competing the Teach First leadership programme, a charity that aims to end educational inequality. Ryan comes from a long line of educators, having inherited his desire to teach from his mother and grandmother.
After a four years of teaching in Oldham, Ryan’s love of travel has led him to Penang, where he hopes to continue to empower students through literature.
In his spare time, Ryan enjoys running, hiking, climbing and cooking dishes from a variety of cultures.
