Mathematics

At SCIPS we place a high emphasis on Mathematics as it is important to everyday life. Our curriculum focuses on key skills and the ability to apply them. These skills include logical reasoning, problem solving and the ability to think in abstract ways.

The Maths scheme of work at our school is based on the UK Mathematics Framework  and its related objectives.

At Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 these include:

Counting, partitioning and calculating Securing number facts, relationships and calculating
Calculating, measuring and understanding shape Handling data and measures
Securing Number facts and understanding shape

First hand experiences and investigation are essential throughout the primary years, as they provide the most effective means of understanding a concept. Mathematics at all levels  includes discussion, practical work, practice and consolidation, problem solving and investigation work, all delivered using a wide range of teaching strategies.

Mental Maths is also considered very important and the children participate in mental Maths sessions from Reception to Y6.

We use a variety of teaching resources in Mathematics including technology, the New Heinemann Maths scheme,  other published materials and suitable equipment to support our teaching. We accept that children will move through the stages of mathematical development at different rates, according to their maturity, ability and experience.

In Year 2 and throughout Key Stage 2 the children are "set" according to their ability. Careful planning and monitoring help ensure that each child's work is appropriate to the individual and gives a feeling of success.
