We live in a literate society where the ability to communicate effectively is essential if our children are to achieve their potential. St. Christopher's School views the acquisition of language skills to be of the greatest importance and as a result the teaching of English is given high priority.

We use the British National Curriculum for English to develop our own broad and challenging English curriculum for Nursery through to Year 6. To ensure that our children have the skills available to understand and respond effectively to the world around them, in all areas of school work, we place great emphasis on all of the following experiences.

* speaking and listening         * drama             * writing                * reading

* phonics and spelling            * grammar and punctuation          * handwriting

We seek to fulfill this curriculum by offering a balanced teaching approach, incorporating practical experiences along side more structured activities.  Children are given the opportunity to work individually, in pairs, in ability or friendship groups or as a class.  Children, for whom English is a second language (E.S.L), are provided with additional language support through our E.S.L program.

To compliment classroom practise we offer a variety of activities within school, promoting the confident use of the language such as  assemblies, competitions, plays, visits etc. We feel this creates a school which offers a rich and rewarding language experience.
